Gracie Mansion is a beautiful historic house museum built in 1799 overlooking the bend in the East River five miles north of the city. The house sits on the same site as Belview Mansion, commandeered by George Washington during the American Revolutionary War, it was captured by the British and destroyed. It is now the official residence of the mayor of New York and it is also used to accommodate visiting officials and guest of the mayor.
